In 1994, the original Donkey Kong Country single-handedly saved the Super Nintendo from losing to the Genesis. Definitely a highlight in the lineup of both the Wii and the 3DS.What makes this game so amazing? Frankly, everything Originally released on the Wii and then shrunk down to the Nintendo 3DS, this version features clearly downgraded visuals, but still ends up being one of the best-looking games on the Nintendo 3DS, with an outstanding soundtrack, lots of polish, excellent level design, and overall wonderful gameplay.
Tl dr – Donkey Kong Country Returns is a truly great Platformer, as long as you can bear its high difficulty level. While I don’t think either version of Donkey Kong Country Returns reaches quite the same heights as the game’s sequel, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, this is still an absolutely phenomenal Platformer, and so long as you don’t mind a challenge you should consider it a must-play regardless of whether you play it on the Wii or on the Nintendo 3DS. But no matter which way you go, you’ll be in for an absolute delight of a Platformer (albeit a highly challenging one). On balance, I’d say that the two versions of Donkey Kong Country are about on par with one another - in the 3DS version of the game, you get a drop in the visual fidelity of the game, but in exchange for that you get welcome new difficulty options and new levels to play.
The Nintendo 3DS version comes with a few extra bonuses, including a new unlockable area with multiple new levels, as well as a new easier difficulty that should help to take some (but definitely not all) of the edge off of the game’s difficulty. Donkey Kong Country Returns features some truly creative level design that makes it a joy to play through and always seems to have something new to bring to the table, and completionists will find this game fits right in with the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy when it comes to an excellent challenge in finding all its hidden secrets. Having said that, if you don’t mind a challenge, you’re in for a treat.

And of course on the Nintendo 3DS’s tiny screen there just isn’t the same sort of detail and resolution that you’d get from a full console experience. The framerate has been cut down to 30FPS and even that can drop a bit further in places. In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, that presentation has naturally been downscaled quite a bit from its console predecessor. This is a game that channels the spirit of the Super Nintendo Donkey Kong Country games, but with new modern 3D visuals and a highly-polished presentation.
